October 28, 2018: On this day, 200 years ago, the British Crown purchased 648,000 acres of land called the Mississage Tract, part of which is now the Town of Caledon. The Ajetance Treaty (or Treaty 19) which memorializes this event was signed by James Ajetance, Chief of the Mississague, and 4 tribal leaders using their ‘totems’ or clan symbols as their signatures, and by William Claus on behalf of the British Crown.

The upper diagonal line on the map represents what is now Highway 9.

The purchase represents the first step in the process that led to the settlement of Albion, Caledon and Chinguacousy Townships starting in 1819.
